Edgewater extends from Foster Avenue (5200 N) to Devon Avenue (6300 N) and Lake Michigan to Ravenswood (1800 W). It includes zip codes 60640, 60660 and Andersonville, Lakewood-Balmoral, Little Saigon, Epic and Edgewater Glen neoghborhoods.
Edgewater is a diverse neighborhood located on the North Side of Chicago. It contains the smaller neighborhoods of Andersonville, Lakewood-Balmoral, and Little Saigon and its residential areas are a mix of high-rises, single-family condos and apartment buildings.
The Lakewood-Balmoral neighborhood, known for its vintage homes and quiet residential areas, is located in the southeast portion of the greater Edgewater community. In the heart of Edgewater, is "Little Saigon," a stretch of Argyle Street that is home to a variety of Cambodian, Vietnamese, and other Southeast Asian shops and restaurants. Along the lake, high-rises take advantage of stunning lake and downtown views.
The progressive population in Edgewater and its sub-neighborhoods is diverse and welcoming. The influx of gays and lesbians from Lakeview, a neighborhood a few miles to the south, has raised property values significantly over the last several years. Business is also booming in Edgewater -- new shops and restaurants are opening throughout the area.
The El Red Line runs through the middle of this area, with stops at Loyola, Granville, Thorndale, Bryn Mawr and Berwyn. The Metra commuter train stops at Lawrence and Ravenswood, which is only a few blocks to the west of the neighborhood. Edgewater is also accessible via Lakeshore Drive.
